Note:
SUPPLY LIST:
8x10 (or larger) Primed Painting Surface. Primed boards, stretched canvases, Arches Oil Paper, primed canvas pads, or primed boards. Bring a minimum of 4. If using canvas pads, bring a sheet of heavy duty cardboard to tape your canvas onto.
9x12 paper palette pad (suitable for oils or acrylic, you can buy larger if you prefer). These come in white or grey toned. Either is fine. You can also use a wood (for oil only) or glass palette. Wood palettes must be coated with several thin coats of linseed oil (drying between coats) before using.
Gamsol For oil painting only, not needed for acrylic. Gamsol is Gamblin brand’s Oderless Mineral Spirits (OMS). We’ll use this to clean brushes and thin the paint for toning the canvas. There are other brands of OMS (such as Turpenoid), but Gamsol is widely viewed as the best and most definitely has the least odor.
A container with a tight sealing lid to store your Gamsol solvent and clean your brushes (oil painting only). I use this one from Amazon: Brush Cleaner Prices range from $10-$25. A simple recycled glass container with screw top lid will also work but having some type of screen or metal to wipe the brushes on at the bottom is ideal. For a homemade version, you can flip over a tuna can, poke holes in it, and place it on the bottom of a metal coffee container (such as the old school Folgers cans). If painting in acrylics just bring a large container for water.
Palette knife…..inexpensive, choose one about 1 or 1.5 inches long
Disposable Gloves if you would like to wear them.
Rags or strong paper towels for wiping your brushes between colors.
Dish Soap or other brush cleaner soap.
Paint Brushes: Can be natural hog bristle (for oils) or synthetic, or a combination. These shapes and sizes are a recommendation. If you already have others, by all means use them. Please don’t feel obligated to purchase ALL these brushes. You’ll want to experiment and see which types and sizes you prefer using. Creative Mark ProStroke is a good synthetic brush, available at Jerry’s and often on sale. I also recommend the Ivory Synthetic and Classic Bristle (for oils) collections from Rosemary and Co. (Rosemaryandco.com).
Flats (or Brights, the bristles will be shorter) #2 (about 1/4 “) and #6 (about 3/8”)…..optional #4 and #8
Filbert (rounded edge) #2 (1/4#) and #6 (3/8”)……optional #4 and #8
Round #2 and #4 synthetic
Oil paints, 37ml tubes (or acrylics, same colors) I recommend Gamblin 1980 Series for an affordable student grade oil paint but any others brands can be used. Professional grade paint will be more expensive because they contain less filler. Utrecht sells their own brand of professional oil paint which is of excellent quality. Purchase from their website Utrechtart.com or DickBlick.com. If you have other brands of oil paint, definitely use them! No need to buy new paint for this class. We will be using the following colors in our exercises:
Titanium White
Burnt Sienna or Transparent Oxide Red
Cadmium Red Medium
Cadmium Yellow Light
Ultramarine Blue
Yellow Ochre
Ivory Black
The Arts Center is located at 964 East Street, Pittsboro, NC 23712, on the backside of the building. To access the studio, drive straight through the open gate and look for the sign on the door that reads "Arts Center".
